Authors Peter York and Ann Barr first started noticing the Sloane Ranger in the wild at the end of the 1970s. It was, York has said, a ‘Martian moment’ — a 'have you seen it?' sensation. Diana-fever was then at its most doe-eyed and beguiling, and a whole host of young clones had begun congregating around SW7 ('Heaven') and the top end of the King’s Road in pleated skirts and Gucci loafers and Hermès scarves and Renault 5s and whippet-scented Barbours.”

Perhaps the best of the books to ride the 80s Handbook wave, the “Sloan Ranger Handbook” looks at Britain’s Barbour-clad Sloanes with the same satirical –but, ultimately, affectionate— microscope that Lisa Birnbach’s “Official Preppy Handbook” turned on their madras-clad cousins across the pond.
